Are animations preserved when converting GLB to FBX?

Yes. Skeletal animations, morph targets, and keyframe data are all carried over. Both formats support full animation, so this is one of the cleanest aspects of the conversion.

Why do my materials look different after converting to FBX?

GLB uses a standardized PBR metallic-roughness model, while FBX relies on older Phong/Lambert shading. The converter approximates the original look, but metallic and roughness values don't map 1:1 to Phong properties. You may need to tweak materials after import.

Will my model be the wrong scale in Unity or Unreal?

It can happen. GLB uses meters as its unit, while FBX defaults to centimeters. Most game engines handle this automatically, but if your model appears 100x too large or too small, check the import scale settings.

Is FBX an open format?

The Format the Industry Still Runs On

GLB is purpose built for the web. It loads fast in browsers, renders on phones, and powers AR experiences with minimal overhead. But the moment a 3D asset needs to move into a professional production pipeline, GLB hits a wall. Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, and MotionBuilder all treat FBX as their primary interchange format. Unity and Unreal Engine have built their entire import chains around it. For better or worse, FBX remains the format that connects the tools where 3D work actually gets done.

Autodesk created FBX (originally developed by Kaydara for its Filmbox motion capture software) and has maintained it as a proprietary format ever since. The specification is closed. The only official way to read or write FBX data is through Autodesk's SDK. This lock-in frustrates developers, but it also means that every Autodesk product handles FBX with deep, first-class support. When you import an FBX file into Maya, you get the full scene graph: meshes, skeletal rigs, keyframe animations, blend shapes, cameras, lights, and custom properties. No other format delivers that breadth across the Autodesk ecosystem.

Where FBX Fits in Real Production Workflows

Game studios build their asset pipelines around FBX because it carries everything a game engine needs in a single file. Unity's documentation recommends FBX as best practice for production imports. Unreal Engine 5's animation pipeline expects FBX at every stage, from skeleton import to motion capture retargeting. When a character artist exports a rigged model from Maya and hands it to a technical animator working in MotionBuilder, that handoff happens through FBX. When a studio purchases a motion capture pack, those clips arrive as FBX files ready for retargeting.

The same pattern holds in film and broadcast. Previs teams working in Maya or 3ds Max exchange scene data through FBX. Virtual production stages running Unreal Engine pull assets from DCC tools through FBX exports. Even Blender, which champions open formats, ships with full FBX import and export support because ignoring FBX would mean ignoring the rest of the industry.

What Changes During Conversion

GLB and FBX represent materials in fundamentally different ways, and this is the most important thing to understand before converting. GLB uses glTF's PBR metallic-roughness material model, the same physically based rendering approach used by modern game engines and real-time renderers. FBX predates PBR. Its native material system supports Lambert and Phong shading, models rooted in the 1990s that calculate lighting with simpler math and fewer texture inputs.

During conversion, PBR textures (base color, metallic, roughness, normal, occlusion, emissive) are preserved as image data, but the material connections change. A metallic-roughness setup becomes a Phong or Lambert material with textures attached. Unity will reconnect these textures to its own PBR shader on import, so the visual result inside Unity is usually close to the original GLB. Unreal Engine does the same. But if you open the FBX in Maya or 3ds Max without further setup, you will see flat, non-physical shading until you manually reassign the textures to a PBR shader like Arnold's aiStandardSurface.

Geometry converts cleanly. Meshes, vertex normals, UV coordinates, and vertex colors transfer without loss. Skeletal animations and morph targets (called blend shapes in FBX) also map directly between the two formats. The conversion is lossless for everything except the material model itself.

The Proprietary Format Problem

FBX's dominance comes with real drawbacks. Because the specification is closed, third-party tools must reverse engineer the binary format or depend on Autodesk's SDK, which is large, version-sensitive, and licensed under restrictive terms. An FBX file exported with the 2024 SDK may lose animation data when imported into software running the 2019 SDK. These version mismatches cause silent data loss that can be difficult to diagnose.

The industry has noticed. Pixar's USD (Universal Scene Description) is gaining ground as an open alternative, and Autodesk itself has started investing in USD support across Maya and 3ds Max. Khronos Group designed glTF as the open standard for real-time 3D delivery. But neither USD nor glTF has replaced FBX in day-to-day game development and DCC tool interchange. That transition will take years. In the meantime, FBX remains the practical choice when you need broad compatibility today.

Making the Most of Your Converted FBX

After converting your GLB to FBX, a few steps will help you get the best results in your target application. In Unity, set the material import mode to "Use External Materials" and assign a Standard or URP Lit shader. Unity's import pipeline will attempt to map textures automatically, but you may need to connect the metallic and roughness maps by hand. In Unreal Engine, import the FBX with "Import Materials" enabled and verify that the engine creates Material Instances with the correct texture assignments.

For Maya or 3ds Max, open the FBX and immediately check the Hypershade or Material Editor. The imported materials will use legacy shading models. Create new aiStandardSurface (Arnold) or V-Ray material nodes, then drag the existing textures into the correct PBR slots: base color, metalness, roughness, and normal. This takes a few minutes per material but restores the physical accuracy of the original GLB asset.

If your GLB contains animations, verify the frame rate after import. GLB stores animation time in seconds, while FBX uses frames. Most converters handle this correctly, but confirming the timeline length and playback speed in your DCC tool prevents subtle timing errors from reaching production.
