Why convert FBX to 3MF?

FBX was originally created by Kaydara under the name FilmBox and is now a proprietary format owned by Autodesk. It is a proprietary interchange format widely used in game development, film production, and animation workflows. FBX supports mesh geometry, skeletal rigs, blend shapes, keyframe animations, cameras, lights, and complex material hierarchies. Tools like Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, and Blender all export FBX, making it common for exchanging animated 3D content. However, all of this animation and rigging infrastructure is irrelevant, and often problematic, when the goal is to produce a physical 3D print.

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) focuses exclusively on what matters for additive manufacturing: mesh geometry, per-triangle colors, multi-part component organization, and build plate metadata. Created by the 3MF Consortium with backing from Microsoft, HP, Autodesk, and Stratasys, 3MF uses an XML-based ZIP archive following the Open Packaging Conventions. Converting FBX to 3MF strips away animation, rigging, and rendering data while preserving geometry and color information, resulting in a lean, openly documented file that any slicer handles correctly.
