Why convert FBX to USDZ?

FBX is a proprietary format originally developed by Kaydara and now owned by Autodesk. It is the industry standard for exchanging 3D assets between content creation tools in games and film, storing meshes, materials, skeletal rigs, and animations. However, Apple's AR ecosystem does not support FBX. To place a 3D model in AR Quick Look on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro, you need USDZ.

USDZ was developed by Apple in collaboration with Pixar and released in 2018. It is built on Pixar's Universal Scene Description framework and packages geometry, PBR materials, and textures into a single file optimized for real time AR rendering. Safari can open USDZ files directly, letting users preview products, furniture, or artwork in their physical space with no app required. Converting FBX to USDZ bridges the gap between professional 3D production tools and Apple's consumer AR platform.

Key advantages of USDZ over FBX

Safari opens USDZ files directly, enabling AR experiences on the web with no app installation.

Single file distribution

USDZ packages all assets into one file, simplifying sharing and embedding.

Apple ecosystem native

USDZ works natively across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro.

Pixar USD foundation

USDZ is built on Pixar's USD framework, which is becoming an industry standard for 3D interchange.

E commerce integration
